Sam Smylie is an accomplished American jazz composer and songwriter based in Santa Monica, California. His compositions blend traditional jazz elements with innovative improvisation, reflecting the vibrant sound emerging from Southern California. Sam has developed a distinctive and captivating sound that continues to push the boundaries of contemporary jazz, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to his art.
His musical journey began in his hometown of San Diego, where he studied piano under the direction of local jazz pianist Danny Green. He later graduated from the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory, led by trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos, and was mentored by bassist Rob Thorsen. Sam’s unique piano style led to performlng with local reggae and surf rock bands, including Sensi Trails and Foxtide.
To further his musical education, Sam moved to Los Angeles County and enrolled in Santa Monica College’s two-year Applied Music Program. There he honed his skills under the guidance of renowned Los Angeles organist Joe Bagg and jazz vocalist Gina Saputo. While at SMC, Sam participated in BroadStage’s Artist Residency with Four-time Grammy Award-winning bassist Stanley Clarke. Sam was selected to play alongside Clarke at college concerts and pre-show for BroadStage, all pivotal experiences in elevating his musical abilities and deepening his understanding of jazz.
Since relocating to Los Angeles, Sam has held a residency at the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire in partnership with the “Nothing but Jazz” series and has performed at notable venues including the Moroccan Lounge, Herb Alpert’s Vibrato, Townhouse Venice, and Tatel. He has also hosted jam sessions at the Stowaway Piano Bar alongside bassist Enrique Duarte and served as the musical director and bandleader for the Late-Late Show with Jack Harris. He is honored to be part of BroadStage @ Fairmont summer series.
